Thank you, Sir Alec, and it's a pleasure to be serving under your chairmanship today.  I beg to move that this House has considered government support for public confidence in the police.  And I want to start by noting the fact that the policing minister cannot be with us today because she is attending the funeral of PC Matthew Blades, who so tragically died in Cleveland in the collision that we're all very sadly familiar with.

So I want to pay tribute to those two officers who died in the line of duty, to all of the Cleveland officers who continue serving in spite of what has happened, and to the whole community who I know have really rallied round both those families, but also the officers who they now, more than ever, appreciate and want to show that appreciation.  So I just wanted to note that and thank the Minister for Immigration and Asylum, am I right in saying, for attending in her place.  I will.
