Westminster Hall House of Commons

00:27 - 00:34
Speaker 1
Order.  I call Jonathan Hinder to move the motion.
00:34 - 01:37
Speaker 2
Thank you, Sir Alec, and it's a pleasure to be serving under your chairmanship today.  I beg to move that this House has considered government support for public confidence in the police.  And I want to start by noting the fact that the policing minister cannot be with us today because she is attending the funeral of PC Matthew Blades, who so tragically died in Cleveland in the collision that we're all very sadly familiar with.  So I want to pay tribute to those two officers who died in the line of duty, to all of the Cleveland officers who continue serving in spite of what has happened, and to the whole community who I know have really rallied round both those families, but also the officers who they now more than ever appreciate and want to show that appreciation.  So I just wanted to note that and thank the Minister for Immigration and Asylum, am I right in saying, for attending in her place.
01:37 - 02:16
Speaker 3
I will.  I thank my honourable friend for giving way and for paying tribute to our incredibly brave police officers in Cleveland who've had an extraordinarily difficult couple of weeks but have dealt with that situation with extreme professionalism.  One of the challenges they have is that since 2010, Cleveland has 220 fewer officers.  They are actually at the bottom of the table for police cuts.  So it's extraordinary how that force has approached this situation with such professionalism, bravery, and courage despite that situation.

But does he agree with me that the funding formula needs to urgently be reviewed so that we're not penalising areas of high deprivation?
