SNP Member of Parliament | Perth and Kinross-shire
Member of Parliament | Perth and Kinross-shire It was so much, Ms. Butler, and it's a pleasure to serve under your chairing this morning, and can I also congratulate myself for securing this debate? And it's actually come as a little bit of a surprise to me because I thought there would have been an overwhelming clamour to secure this debate to celebrate the 10 years of the Brexit referendum. I really thought they would be tripping over themselves to try and ensure that they could give us this debate to tell us all the wonderful things that has happened since we had that referendum some 10 years ago. It was the opportunity to go wandering through those sunlit uplands, to celebrate this dynamic political and economic growth, the political stability that was secured, immigration under control, and all the wonders of our new-found freedom. Do you remember, Ms. Butler, we were going to have our cake and eat it?
We were going to secure the easiest trade deal in history. And of course, we were going to take back control. And from these lofty heights up there in those sunlit uplands, we could peer down and admire all the shiny new hospitals that we'd managed to build because of the 350 million pounds we had saved weekly from the evil and wicked EU. And perhaps in a more reflective moment, we could think back and wonder why did we ever put up with those bendy bananas, vacuum cleaners that lacked that extra Brexit suction, EU light bulbs that wouldn't even light, and of course, Ms. Butler, thank goodness the existential threat to the Great British sausage has now been removed. Thank goodness Brexit saved us from all these barmy Brussels bureaucrats.
But I suppose, Ms. Butler, there are anniversaries that we look forward to: 40ths, weddings, births. And there are some anniversaries that invite social reflection: the end of wars, the passing of great men and women, great historic events. And then, of course, there's the Brexit referendum anniversary. And somehow it just feels so much different to all the other things that we mark and we pass. Because Brexit is a rather extraordinary anniversary to celebrate.
