Speaker 1
Can I just say gentlemen may take their jackets off if they wish.  Order, Paul Foster to move the motion.
15:44 - 16:53
Speaker 2
I beg to move that the House has considered the matter of reducing levels of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke.  Thank you, Dame Siobhain.  It's an honour to speak under your chairmanship today.  Can I also thank honourable members who are also attending.  Cardiovascular disease remains one of the UK's biggest killers and one of the greatest public health challenges facing our country.

It devastates families, communities, and livelihoods in every corner of the United Kingdom.  It has touched countless families, including my own, albeit my challenge is not cardiovascular disease but a congenital heart defect, a silent killer that was diagnosed last year following a routine health check.  I am still completely symptom-free but will have to have open heart surgery to replace my aortic valve at some point in the future.  I am, however, in the very safe hands of the NHS.  Today, Dame Siobhain, is about ensuring that the voices of those living with cardiovascular conditions are heard in this House.

But it's also about something more fundamental.
