Communications and Digital Committee House of Lords
00:02 - 00:58
Speaker 1
Good morning. I'd like to welcome everyone to this meeting of the Communications and Digital Committee. As many of you will know, the committee has been running a short series of evidence sessions focused on certain topics raised by the government's review of the BBC Royal Charter. And we know that you recently both of you recently met the CMS Committee in the Commons, but it's likely that most of our questions will be slightly different to theirs. This is the final session in this piece of work for us, and we're delighted to have you with us, Dr. Samir Shah, BBC's Chair, and its new Director General, Mr. Brittin.
So thank you for coming and welcome to your first session with the committee. Dr. Shah, it's good to see you again. Thank you both for being here. So, I'll start with you if I can, Mr. Brittin. The BBC's response to the government's green paper sets out ambitious plans to keep transforming the BBC for future success.
As the new Director General, what is your overall vision for the BBC in the next charter period?
00:58 - 01:34
Speaker 2
Well thank you, and thank you for making me welcome. I'm just short of two months in and obviously my job is with the team at the BBC to develop a vision that will take the BBC successfully into the decades to come. And as I've said in the committee last week, it is a moment of jeopardy, I think, for the BBC and for public service media, given what's happening in the world. And therefore I think the onus on us is to reinvent the BBC for the world we're now in. And that requires us to focus on the audience value, the public service value of the BBC.
