Procedure Committee House of Commons
00:03 - 00:39
Speaker 5
Order, order. Good morning and welcome to this public session of the Procedure Committee. Written Parliamentary Questions, or WPQs for short, are an important tool for MPs in raising matters of public interest and dealing with much of their constituency work. And over the past few months, we've been inquiring into the whole WPQ system. So we've taken lots of interesting evidence so far, and today we're putting some of that to the Leader of the House of Commons to hear more about the government's views.
So therefore, we're very pleased to be joined this morning by the Leader of the House, Sir Alan Campbell. Good morning to you. Before we begin, would you introduce yourself for the record?
00:39 - 00:44
Speaker 1
Yes, I'm Alan Campbell, Leader of the House.
00:44 - 01:02
Speaker 3
Thank you for your time. As is traditional, the first question comes from me, and that is, Erskine May gives the purpose of WPQs as being to seek information or press for action. And I just wondered, do you think that this is what they're still used for today, or has the underlying purpose of WPQs changed?
