Thank you, Sir John. It's a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship. Banking services in rural areas have been decimated. While the big banks make billions in profits, they close branches with impunity, turning their backs on customers and leaving small businesses struggling with the impact. Last year, Lloyds reported a 6.7 billion pound pre-tax profit, yet in the same period, they shut 218 branches with a further 95 set to close this year.
64% of all bank and building society branches that were open in January 2015 have closed in the past 10 years, numbering over 6,000. In my constituency of South Devon, which covers around 450 square miles, we now have one bank branch left, and I wonder how long that will be there.
