International Relations and Defence Committee

1 July 2026

International Relations and Defence Committee House of Lords

00:03 - 01:27
Speaker 1
Dr. Stuenkel, who's beaming in.  And thank you very much indeed for making yourselves available to speak to the committee and offer your perspective.  So I hope that this is the right place, you're expecting this, on the role of non-Western rising powers in the multilateral system.  This is our fifth evidence session that we've had on this particular inquiry, which as I hope you're aware is to explore the future of the multilateral system and the United Kingdom's role within it.  Now the session when we say go will be streamed live on the parliamentary website.

A transcript will be taken of the exchange and that once available we'll send you a copy of the transcript and then if there are any subtle amendments you wish to make to what you have said, that is your occasion to do it.  Internally can I remind members if they have any specific relevant interests that you should declare them when first speaking.  Are we live?  Okay, so the session is now live.  And can I perhaps start and just take a couple of minutes each just to introduce yourselves and then we'll start the questions.

And so Dr. Stuenkel, perhaps I could come to you first, just sort of give us a little bit about your background, not yet into the subject matter itself.

Speaker 2
Thank you very much, good morning, it's a pleasure to be here and thank you for the invitation.  My name is Oliver Stuenkel.  I'm a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.  I'm also at the Belfer Center at the Harvard Kennedy School where I coordinate a study group on the geopolitics of the Global South.  And I'm a professor of international relations at the Getulio Vargas Foundation in São Paulo, Brazil.
