Welcome to the meeting of the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee.  Today is the final oral evidence session for our BBC Royal Charter Review inquiry and we are joined by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, the Right Honourable Lisa Nandy MP, and Robert Specterman-Green, the Director of Media and International at the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.  You're both very welcome.  Thank you so much for joining us.  Before I begin, I just need to remind members to declare any interest at the point that they ask their questions.

Can I kick off, please, Secretary of State?  We had the BBC in to see us last week and we asked them about some of the new responsibilities that the Green Paper suggests that they take on.  It suggests that there are new public purposes, things like technology and innovation and maybe mis- and disinformation.  Effectively what they've said is, yes, it's a great idea, but we need the funding.  It's a fair challenge, isn't it?

If you're asking them to do more, you can't expect them to do it for the same or less money.  Do you think you can secure the funding model that actually meets your ambition for the government Green Paper and the future of the BBC?

Yeah, I do, but I think it is a challenge.  I think it's a fair challenge to the government, but I think it's also a challenge for us to meet this moment.  But I've been really clear that we're determined to do it.  I think the BBC is in a challenging position at the moment.  I watched your session with the Chair and the new Director General a couple of days ago and I think they outlined it in starker terms.
