Business and Trade Committee Actual start House of Commons
14:44 - 15:23
Speaker 1
Order, order. Welcome to today's session of the Business and Trade Select Committee. And we're delighted, Peter Kyle, that you've been able to join us for your pre-summer hearing. Thank you very much. And congratulations to Amanda Brooks on the new role.
Secretary of State, when you last came before us, you were quite new in post, and we asked you a little bit then about what your vision for the department was. I'd like to just repeat that question.
Now you've had well over half a year in the role, you've got a lot of runs on the board since then. How has your view changed about the kind of growth strategy that the UK should be pursuing and your own department's priorities therein?
15:23 - 16:08
Speaker 2
Thanks, Chair, and thanks to the committee for asking me back again, and also for Amanda as well, who can I just say has done an outstanding job as interim Permanent Secretary. And one of the observations I have in the time I've been in this job is just how outstanding the department and its officials are. This is a quite turbulent period in global economic life, and departments like mine are incredibly important to stabilize in a way that I don't think many of my predecessors have had to do in the past. So yes, growth remains the priority. And when you've seen now how that's been focused, the industrial strategy is now a year old, a year old in the coming week.
