Good morning everyone.  I'm Jala Hinchcliffe, the Secretary of the Department of Parliamentary Services, and it's my pleasure to be your MC for this morning's proceedings.

To begin with, I'd like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land where we're meeting today, the Ngunnawal and Ngambri people, and pay my respects to their elders past, present, and emerging.  I also acknowledge and celebrate the diversity of culture and contributions of First Nations people across Australia, and extend that respect to any First Nations people joining us today.  It is a great honor to welcome you today to Australian Parliament House to celebrate the Australian National Flag in celebration of National Flag Day, which is marked each year on the 3rd of September.  And this year is especially significant because it also marks the 125th anniversary of Federation, marking the beginning of Australia's national parliamentary journey, and it's also the 125th anniversary of the Australian flag being first flown.  What a great event.

National Flag Day is an opportunity for all Australians to reflect on the meaning of our national flag and to fly or display it with pride.  This morning's program includes a short ceremony to mark the occasion with contributions from special guests and an opportunity to see the flag up close and to unfurl it at the very end.  Following the formalities, you'll also have an opportunity to take a photo with the flag as part of the occasion, and there'll also be some cake.  So stick around for a great morning.  I'd like you all to join me to thank this amazing school choir that we have with us today from St Francis of Assisi's in Calwell.

Their beautiful singing this morning has been absolutely delightful.  It's not easy to stand up in front of a big group of people like this, in front of a massive flag like we've got behind them, and I think they have done an absolutely beautiful job.  So thank you so much, boys and girls, for your beautiful singing for us this morning.  And now we're going to ask them to lead us in the Australian National Anthem.  So could you all please be upstanding.
