Joint Standing Committee on Treaties Australian Parliament

20:11 - 21:40
Speaker 1
Yeah, good to go.  All right.  We'll start that again.  Good morning.  I declare open this public hearing of the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties for its inquiry into the framework agreement between the Government of Australia and the Government of the United States of America on its cooperation in aeronautics and the exploration and use of aerospace and outer space for peaceful purposes.

I begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians on the land on which we meet today and pay my respects to elders both past and present, and I also extend that respect to any First Nations people that are joining us today.  In accordance with the committee's resolution of 31 July 2025, this hearing will be broadcast and proof and official transcripts of the proceedings will be published on the Parliament's website.  I remind all present as chair that I'll ensure proceedings are conducted in an orderly, respectful and courteous way.  I would also like to remind members of the media for the need of fair and accurate reporting of the committee's proceedings.  I'd like to call our first and only witnesses for today's hearing.

I now welcome representatives of the Australian Space Agency, CSIRO, the Bureau of Meteorology, Geoscience Australia and the Department of Foreign Affairs to give evidence today.

For the Hansard record, would you please state your full name and the capacity in which you are appearing before the committee?
