Joint Standing Committee on Treaties Australian Parliament
11:54 - 13:43
Speaker 1
Minutes just gone past 2:00.
I declare open this joint public hearing of the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties for its inquiry into the Oceans of Peace Alliance and the Fiji-Australia Vuvale Union. I practiced this before and it's just... Vuvale, Vuvale, I'll get it by the end of this hearing, Vuvale Union. This hearing will be the focus of both treaties together as they were negotiated together and form part of a closely related package of bilateral arrangements between Australia and Fiji. Accordingly, the committee has elected to consider the treaties in one single hearing.
I begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians on the land on which we all meet today and pay my respects to the elders both past, present and emerging. I also extend that respect to any Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who might be joining us today.
In accordance with the committee's resolution of 31 July 2025, this hearing will be broadcast and proof and official transcripts of the proceedings will be published on the Parliament's website. I remind all present as chair that I will conduct the proceedings in an orderly, respectful and courteous way. I do note of course we do have many committee members joining us online, so please use the the chat function, the hands up function or wave at me frantically to get the call. I remind all members of the media of the need for fair and accurate reporting of the proceedings of the committee. I now welcome representatives of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade, Department of Defence, Department of Defence, Home Affairs and the Australian Federal Police to give evidence today.
