Business and Trade Committee Actual start House of Commons

Speaker 2
Welcome to this meeting of the Business and Trade Select Committee as we pursue our inquiry into artificial intelligence. We're looking in particular at the way artificial intelligence is or is not being diffused through the British economy today.
So thank you very much indeed to our witnesses for coming along. Stephen, if I could start with you, just tell us from your perspective, how do you see AI being diffused through the businesses in the sector you represent?

Speaker 1
Thank you very much for the opportunity today to give evidence. So obviously we represent national manufacturing, we're the national manufacturing body. And if you think about manufacturing, it's about 130,000 businesses in the manufacturing sector in this country, which represents two and a half million jobs, of which 800 are large companies and the rest are SMEs.
So we have to think about this in two parts. It's very important that we do that. Overall, if we look at the data and the latest survey data about AI adoption in the manufacturing sector, we've got 37% of that total 130,000 running small pilots at the moment on AI, 43% in that experimental sort of stage, 18% haven't done anything at all, and only 2% with full implementations of AI in factories.
