Business and Trade Committee Actual start House of Commons
14:45 - 15:16
Speaker 2
Welcome to today's session of the Business and Trade Committee as we wrap up our inquiry on artificial intelligence. Thank you very much to our witnesses who are here in person in a very hot House of Commons. And Professor Carl Frey, thank you very much indeed for joining us online. Carl, perhaps I could start with you. You've written a brilliant book about this and you're publishing some excellent work.
Just tell us, what do you think is going to be the impact of artificial intelligence on the UK labour market? What are your best assumptions about this right now?
15:16 - 15:57
Speaker 1
Thank you, thank you very much for your kind invitation. It's a real pleasure to be with you. So right now we're not seeing much in terms of impact of AI on labour markets. We're seeing some impact in certain pockets like translation work and other areas like coding.
And those are mostly tasks which are verifiable. And I think one of the key reasons that we will still need humans in the loop for some time going forward is that most activities still need human verification. And so AI makes mistakes and we need workers that are capable of verifying the output. That doesn't mean that there is not going to be an impact on labor markets going forward. And I think one critical question is where are those workers going to be located?
