Chamber House of Lords
02:15 - 02:20
Speaker 1
The first oral question, Lord Randall of Uxbridge.
02:20 - 02:25
Speaker 2
I beg leave to ask the question standing in my name on the order paper.
02:25 - 03:00
Speaker 3
My Lords, the hare is a much-loved species in this country, and England is among the few European countries which doesn't have a close season on shooting hares during their breeding season. This is a terrible oversight, and this government's animal welfare strategy has made a commitment to consider how to introduce a close season for hares. It will require a suitable primary legislative vehicle, and Defra is exploring every opportunity to find one.
03:00 - 03:24
Speaker 2
My Lords, I thank the noble lady the minister. I know she shares my frustration at the length of time that it is taking for this legislation to appear. I would say that although the hare can hide in the long grass, it's about time we flushed it out, and if the minister has got any suggestions how we can advance this legislation in any way, I would be most grateful.
