Intervenant 4
Thank you, Pádraig. I'm delighted to have chaired the first formal EPSCO meeting of the Irish Presidency. Our discussions today demonstrated a shared commitment among Member States to build a more inclusive Europe. My colleague ministers recognize that social inclusion and high-quality employment are not only social objectives, but that they are also key foundations for sustainable growth and competitiveness. We had a valuable exchange at lunchtime on how best to support participation in the labour market and to ensure that those who are facing barriers to employment can access the opportunities that they need to thrive.
We all know that a job is the best way out of poverty, and it is important that we break down the barriers that exist for those who are distant from the workforce. The Council has also just held a very good exchange of views on the forthcoming Quality Jobs Act. This was an important opportunity to get Member State views on this important piece of legislation. We exchanged views on the key elements that will support high-quality employment, including on skills development and job security, on fair working conditions, on the opportunities for career progression. There was broad agreement that competitiveness and social progress must go hand in hand.
A Europe that creates good jobs and ensures that everyone has the opportunity to participate is a Europe that will be better equipped to meet future challenges and to succeed in a rapidly changing global economy and a global world. As a Presidency, we will continue to prioritize security, values and competitiveness throughout our term. We will work closely with Member States, with Vice-President Mînzatu, with all of the European institutions and the social partners to deliver the practical outcomes that will improve the lives of our fellow citizens across the European Union. And I hand you to Minister Foley.
