Thank you, Madam Chair. So this new clause would require the Secretary of State to conduct and publish a review into the use of ECG screenings to identify cardiac issues in persons over 14 years of age. So 12 young people die every week from undiagnosed heart conditions. One of those was Clarissa Nicholls, who died just before her 21st birthday while on a year abroad in France. Her mother and her friends have been campaigning tirelessly to not only provide ECGs to young people, but also to raise awareness about early detection of these conditions.

So finding a heart condition like this does not mean exercise must stop or that life goes on hold. It just means appropriate alterations can be made to keep the young person safe, active, and healthy. And such a scheme has been rolled out in Italy and been hugely successful. This amendment would push the government to look seriously at ECGs for young people as an early identifier for potentially fatal conditions so we don't lose up to 12 young people a week just due to lack of testing.
